Flood-affected workers in West Virginia eligible for job loss benefits

Governor Jim Justice and WorkForce West Virginia have announced that Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits are now available to individuals in seven counties in West Virginia. These counties were declared major disaster areas following severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that occurred in April 2024. The affected counties include Hancock, Kanawha, Marshall, Ohio, Roane, Wetzel, and Wood.

Individuals who lost their jobs due to the natural disasters that occurred between April 11 to April 12, 2024, are eligible to apply for federal unemployment benefits. This includes self-employed workers who may not typically qualify for regular unemployment insurance benefits. Claims must be filed by July 23, 2024, and applicants will need to provide proof of past earnings.

To apply for DUA benefits, individuals must contact WorkForce West Virginia by email or phone during working hours. Eligible individuals include those who were unable to reach their jobs, had job offers delayed, became sole providers due to a family member’s death, or suffered injuries preventing them from working as a result of the disasters.

Aside from assisting with DUA claims, WorkForce West Virginia also offers reemployment services such as resume assistance, job search help, and job placement. They can be contacted for more information or to report fraud at 1-800-252-JOBS (5627). The goal of this program is to support those who have been affected by the natural disasters and help them get back on their feet as soon as possible.
