West Virginia Governor Jim Justice stole the show at the Republican National Convention when he introduced his 60-pound English bulldog, Babydog, to the cheering crowd. The tan-and-white bulldog, known for her appearances with Justice in the state Senate and her popularity in West Virginia politics, sat next to the governor on a black leather chair, captivating the audience with her presence.
Babydog has become a celebrity in her own right, with a mural featuring her likeness in the state Capitol and an official social media account. Her favorite things include Justice, Wendy’s nuggets, riding shotgun in the car, and napping.
In addition to being Justice’s loyal companion, Babydog has been named the official mascot of his vaccination sweepstakes campaign during the pandemic, encouraging West Virginians to get vaccinated. The dog was a gift from Justice’s children in 2019 and has embraced fame, with merchandise featuring her image available for sale on Justice’s campaign fundraising website.
Governor Justice, a prominent Republican figure supported by former President Donald Trump and other party members, is favored to win a U.S. Senate seat in West Virginia. With Babydog by his side, Justice continues to garner attention and support from both local residents and political figures as he campaigns for higher office.
