Tommy Shireman, a farmer from Havre de Grace, Md., views farming as a spiritual practice and mission, based on a biblical calling to care for the earth. Although he did not come from an agricultural background, Shireman’s path into farming was inspired by experiences in ministry and a desire to work with young interns. His farm, Third Way Farm, focuses on building soil through no-till methods with minimal chemical use. Shireman shared his unique farming practices during a field day sponsored by Future Harvest, impressing attendees with his use of tarps for tillage and water management, as well as companion planting, cover cropping, and composting with worm colonies. The farm also includes a livestock operation and a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Shireman’s dedication to biodiversity and perennial crops, as well as his commitment to providing a learning environment for aspiring farmers, were highlighted during the event. Attendees included seasoned farmers and newcomers alike, all eager to learn from Shireman’s innovative approach to sustainable agriculture. As an advocate for non-violence in farming practices, Shireman hopes to inspire others to consider alternative methods that prioritize conservation and stewardship of the land.
