West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who is running for governor, outlined his main goals for the state if he wins the general election in November while attending the Republican National Convention. Morrisey expressed his desire to reverse the effects of “Bidenomics” on West Virginians by using part of the state’s budget surplus to give additional tax breaks and remove the income tax. He emphasized the need to compete economically with neighboring states, comparing it to the rivalry between West Virginia University and Pitt.
In addition to economic goals, Morrisey highlighted the opioid crisis in West Virginia, particularly focusing on the synthetic opioid fentanyl. He plans to classify fentanyl as a Weapon of Mass Destruction in an effort to combat its devastating impact on the state.
While Morrisey’s plans are ambitious, some researchers have expressed concerns about how classifying fentanyl could impact research efforts. Nevertheless, Morrisey remains determined to address these pressing issues if elected as West Virginia’s next governor.
