Christopher Dunn was released from prison after over 30 years behind bars when a Missouri judge overturned his murder conviction in the killing of 15-year-old Ricco Rogers in 1990. The judge ruled in favor of vacating Dunn’s conviction based on new evidence presented by the Circuit Attorney that proved Dunn’s innocence. However, the state Supreme Court ruled that Dunn must remain in prison until a potential re-trial by prosecutors. The Midwest Innocence Project expressed joy at Dunn’s release, but also highlighted the injustice of the time stolen from him due to the lengthy legal proceedings.
Dunn, who was falsely accused of the murder at 18, maintained his innocence throughout his imprisonment, with no physical evidence connecting him to the crime. The conviction was based on the testimonies of two young witnesses who later recanted, saying they were coerced by prosecutors and police. One witness admitted to lying in his testimony, thinking Dunn was part of a rival gang, while the other witness has been inconsistent in identifying Dunn as the shooter.
The Missouri attorney general’s office appealed the overturning of Dunn’s conviction, arguing that the witnesses’ original testimonies should still be considered accurate despite recantations. Dunn’s family and supporters are relieved he has been released, but acknowledge the injustice of the time he lost due to being wrongfully imprisoned.
