At the Paris Olympics, Latino fans celebrated the success of athletes from their home countries as well as those representing Team USA. Thirteen Latino athletes returned home with gold medals, including Rebeca Andrade of Brazil who won gold in gymnastics, Beatriz Sousa of Brazil who won gold in judo, and Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic who made history by winning gold in the women’s 400m race.
Diana Taurasi from Argentina, who plays for Team USA, won her sixth Olympic gold medal in women’s basketball, breaking a record. Mijain López Núñez from Cuba also made history by earning his fifth consecutive gold medal in wrestling. Adriana Ruano of Guatemala won the country’s first-ever gold medal in shooting, while Erislandy Alvarez of Cuba won gold in boxing.
Other Latino athletes who won gold included Ana Patrícia and Duda Lisboa of Brazil in beach volleyball, Francisca Crovetto Chadid of Chile in skeet shooting, Jose Torres Gil of Argentina in BMX freestyle, Brian Pintado of Ecuador in race walking, and Hezly Rivera of Team USA in gymnastics.
Various Latin American countries, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico, won medals at the Games. Additionally, athletes like Ángel Barajas of Colombia, Daniella Ramirez, and Anita Alvarez of Team USA, and Sebastian Rivera of Puerto Rico touched fans’ hearts with their performances, despite not winning gold medals.
