The United States is set to sell $20 billion worth of weapons to Israel, as the pressure mounts on the United Kingdom to halt arms sales to the country. Reports suggest that the UK may be considering restricting some arms sales in the near future. Pro-Palestine activists have called on the government to stop arms sales to Israel due to the high death toll and devastation caused by the recent conflict in Gaza.
The UK granted over 100 export licenses for weapons sales to Israel between October 7 and the end of May. Despite the Labour government’s recent victory in the July election, they have not yet suspended arms exports to Israel, citing the lack of evidence of serious violations of International Humanitarian Law. However, there are indications that a partial suspension may be announced soon.
The UK has provided military equipment to Israel, including explosive devices, assault rifles, and components for F-35 fighter jets. The Campaign Against Arms Trade has highlighted the UK’s role in supplying parts for F-35s used in the conflict in Gaza.
Campaigners, legal experts, and advocacy groups have criticized the UK’s delay in halting arms sales to Israel, citing violations of international law. They argue that continued arms exports to Israel violate the Arms Trade Treaty and contribute to human rights abuses in the region.
The Labour government has resumed funding for the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees, signaling a shift in policy towards supporting Palestinians. However, there is still pressure on the government to implement a complete arms embargo on Israel to prevent further violations of international law and human rights abuses.
