Progressive California Democratic representative Ro Khanna criticized the Democratic National Convention for not allowing a Palestinian person to speak on the main stage, calling it a “tragic mistake.” The Uncommitted National Movement continued its sit-in to protest this decision, with leaders emphasizing the importance of Palestinian voices being heard. Khanna, who has been vocal about his support for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, pointed out the historical erasure of Palestinian rights, especially in the context of the Balfour Declaration.
Michigan House of Representatives majority leader Abraham Aiyash also condemned the convention’s decision, stating that leaders cannot claim to support peace in Gaza while denying Palestinians the opportunity to speak their truth. These comments reflect growing discontent among Arab American and Muslim communities regarding the Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The sit-in outside the convention, attended by representative Cori Bush and organized by the Uncommitted Movement, emphasized the importance of Palestinian representation in American political discourse. The group is urging the Democratic leadership to add a Palestinian American speaker to the lineup and has set a deadline for a response. The ongoing protests highlight the demand for inclusivity and diverse voices within the Democratic Party, especially on issues related to the Middle East and Palestinian rights.
