School board dismisses superintendent following incident involving rooftop desk prank and bullying accusations

The Antioch Unified School District in California fired Superintendent Stephanie Anello after it was revealed that a mid-level supervisor, Kenneth Turnage II, and friend of Anello’s family, played a cruel joke by moving a subordinate’s desk onto a roof. The incident, which happened in April, sparked controversy, leading to Anello’s contract termination on Wednesday. The board voted 5-0 in favor of removing Anello from her position. Turnage, who made controversial statements regarding Covid-19 in the past, remains on administrative leave. Anello was not present at the meeting where her termination was announced.

Anello was paid over $307,000 in 2022, including overtime and fringe benefits, while Turnage received just under $79,000, including overtime and fringe benefits. The decision to fire Anello was met with applause at the meeting, with board members expressing their support for the change in leadership. Anello and Turnage have not commented on the situation publicly following the announcement of Anello’s termination. The incident has brought unwanted attention to the district and raised questions about the behavior of its employees in positions of power.
