The historic Zeyrek neighbourhood in Istanbul has seen a resurgence in the traditional hammam ritual, with the newly restored Zeyrek Cinili hammam leading the way. The revival of communal bathing in Ottoman society is reflected in the restoration of historic hammams such as Kilic Ali Pasa and Cukurcuma, as well as luxury hotels incorporating the ritual.
The 16th-century Zeyrek Cinili hammam, meticulously restored over 13 years, offers a glimpse into the history and culture of the traditional bathhouses, with original features and ancient standards maintained. Director Koza Gureli Yazgan emphasizes the importance of honoring the legacy of the bathhouses, providing guests with an authentic experience.
The experience at Zeyrek Cinili involves hydrating in the cold room, being vigorously scrubbed and massaged in the hot room, and socializing in the relaxing space. Historically, hammams were a social hub for women, providing opportunities for gossip, business discussions, and even political discourse. The decline of hammams in the 19th century was attributed to the rise of private bathrooms, changing attitudes, and economic struggles in the Ottoman Empire.
As the hammam ritual gains popularity once again in Istanbul, it serves as a vehicle for reconnecting with cultural traditions and history. The restoration of historic bathhouses like Zeyrek Cinili provides a window into a bygone era, offering guests an opportunity to experience the centuries-old legacy of communal bathing in a modern context.
