Lightning Poses Threat to Line Fire East of L.A., Putting 35K Homes and Buildings at Risk

An out-of-control wildfire, known as the Line Fire, in the foothills of the San Bernardino National Forest east of Los Angeles has threatened tens of thousands of buildings and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate due to triple-digit temperatures. The fire has burned 27 square miles of grass and chaparral, creating challenging conditions for firefighters due to steep terrain and pyroculumus clouds that generate winds and lightning.

Evacuation orders were issued for Running Springs, Arrowbear Lake, and other areas, with many residents leaving behind their homes and belongings. State firefighters reported three injuries and over 35,000 structures threatened by the fire, with hot and dry conditions expected to persist. The fire is near popular mountain towns where Southern California residents ski and mountain bike, impacting local businesses and schools.

In San Bernardino County, additional firefighters were called in to combat the blaze as vegetation is extremely dry and temperatures exceed 100 degrees. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and efforts are being made to protect homes and structures. The fire in Clearlake City, north of San Francisco, has forced thousands to evacuate and destroyed several homes and buildings.

Officials are monitoring the situation closely as weather conditions could continue to fuel the fires, with smoke and flames visible from surrounding areas. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for San Bernardino County, and more support is expected to arrive to assist with containment efforts.
