West Virginia University’s men’s golf team had a strong showing at the Gopher Invitational, with two players finishing in the top 20. Junior Kurtis Grant and sophomore Jackson Davenport both posted impressive performances at the tournament, which took place at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota.

Grant, a junior from Herndon, Virginia, shot a 1-over 217 to finish tied for 14th place overall. His consistent play was highlighted by a final round of even-par 72. Davenport, a sophomore from Austin, Texas, carded a 2-over 218 to finish tied for 19th place. His tournament included rounds of 74, 70, and 74.

The team as a whole finished 11th out of 15 teams in the competitive field, with a team total of 889 strokes. Head coach Sean Covich was pleased with the team’s performance and sees room for improvement as the season progresses.

“We did some good things out there this week,” said Covich. “We had some guys play really well and show that they can compete at a high level. But we also had some mistakes that cost us. We’ll learn from those and continue to get better.”

The Mountaineers will look to build on their success at the Gopher Invitational as they prepare for their next tournament, the Colonial Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. With Grant and Davenport leading the way, the team is optimistic about their chances of having a successful season.

Overall, the team’s performance at the Gopher Invitational shows promise for the remainder of the season, with Grant and Davenport providing solid play and leadership on the course. As they continue to improve and fine-tune their game, the Mountaineers are poised for a strong finish in upcoming tournaments.
