UN officials and aid groups are calling for an end to the humanitarian catastrophe and appalling human suffering in the Gaza Strip as world leaders gather in New York for the annual UN General Assembly. The heads of UN agencies, including the World Food Programme and UNICEF, are demanding safe and unimpeded access for aid workers to help the 2.1 million residents in need of food and livelihood assistance. The ongoing violence in Gaza has led to more than 500 attacks on healthcare facilities and the death of nearly 300 humanitarian aid workers. The UN has long faced obstacles in delivering aid to Gaza and distributing it due to the intense conflict.
The current situation in Gaza, with 24 people killed and 60 wounded in Israeli military attacks in the latest 24-hour period, highlights the dire conditions faced by the residents. Al Jazeera’s reporter in Gaza described the situation as largely one-sided, with the Israeli military dominating the conflict. The war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023 and has resulted in the deaths of over 41,400 people, the displacement of nearly all of Gaza’s population, and a rise in hunger and disease.
The UN officials are calling for urgent action to end the violence and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The international community is urged to prioritize the needs of the residents in Gaza and ensure the safety and well-being of aid workers delivering essential assistance.
