The Israeli military has warned civilians in southern Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah positions as they intensify attacks on their neighbor. The IDF has issued a first-of-its-kind warning in Lebanon, stating that they will engage in extensive, precise strikes against terror targets embedded throughout the country. The current campaign only involves aerial strikes, as Israel aims to create safe conditions for citizens to return to the northern part of the country and destroy Hezbollah’s infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah and the Israeli military have been trading fire since Hamas’ terrorist attack on October 7, resulting in thousands of deaths and failed ceasefire talks. IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that Israel has begun striking Hezbollah targets throughout the country. The military has advised civilians in villages near Hezbollah military positions to evacuate immediately as they are in harm’s way.
The conflict escalated last week with explosions in Hezbollah members’ pagers and walkie-talkies and a deadly airstrike in Beirut. Hezbollah responded with rocket attacks on Israel, with some hitting Israeli territory. The Israeli military is investigating reports that the leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, was killed in an airstrike, although there is no positive evidence to confirm his death. Israel continues to engage in airstrikes in Lebanon as tensions between the two sides remain high.
