In Southern California, two single-engine planes, a Nanchang CJ-6 and a Yakovlev Yak-52, collided mid-air near Lancaster, resulting in the death of one pilot. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. PT on a Sunday. Only the two pilots were on board the planes at the time. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the crash, with one pilot pronounced dead and the other reporting no injuries. The planes, both used for aerobatics and hobby flights, landed in different locations in Lancaster. The Yak-52, a Soviet-era aircraft from the 1930s, is owned by Fight’s On! LLC, while the Nanchang CJ-6 is a Chinese military aircraft from the 1960s. The pilots have not been identified, and the cause of the collision is unclear. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. NBC News Digital reporter Marlene Lenthang covered the breaking news, with contributions from Jay Blackman.
