The Senate has passed the Enhanced Presidential Security Act unanimously, following a 405-0 vote in the House. This legislation will provide the same level of protection to former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris as President Joe Biden. The bill is only three pages long, giving the Secret Service broad discretion on how to implement measures to reach the required level of protection. This move comes after an apparent second assassination attempt on Trump and Biden’s call for Congress to provide more support to the Secret Service. The bill was introduced in the House by Reps. Mike Lawler and Ritchie Torres, and brought to the Senate floor by Sen. Rick Scott. The Acting Secret Service Director confirmed that Trump already has the highest level of protection and is receiving everything that Biden does. However, the agency is looking for a new approach to presidential protection. The passage of this bill coincides with discussions in the House about a broader spending measure that includes an additional $231 million for the Secret Service. Trump recently accused the Justice Department of downplaying an alleged assassination plot against him in Florida, highlighting the ongoing security concerns for political figures.
