The European Union Drugs Agency is facing new challenges as the illegal drugs trade continues to surge across the continent. Executive Director Alexis Goosdeel highlighted the growing diversification of illegal drugs and the increasing violence linked to organised crime during an interview with Isabel Marques da Silva. Goosdeel emphasized the emergence of new illicit substances, such as ‘pink cocaine’, and the need for enhanced cooperation to address the evolving drug market.
The rise of new narcotics like ‘chemsex’ drugs, along with the persistent use of ‘traditional’ hard drugs like cannabis and cocaine, paints a complex and constantly changing picture of drug consumption in Europe. This trend is directly tied to an increase in drug-related violence, with criminal gangs importing and distributing illicit drugs from around the world. Goosdeel pointed out the alarming growth of drug-related violence in the EU over the past decade, emphasizing the need for decisive action.
The Executive Director warned that the surge in drug-related violence poses a threat to the rule of law in the EU, with criminal organisations adapting their methods and increasing their influence across member states. The Covid-19 pandemic has further complicated the situation, with most drugs now entering Europe through containers, a change from previous routes. Goosdeel stressed the need for agile responses to address the challenges posed by the evolving drug market and the rise of organised crime in Europe.
