Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented his “victory plan” in a meeting with US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in New York. The plan outlined Ukraine’s conditions for a potential ceasefire, including discussions on defense packages, sanctions against Russia, and measures regarding Russian assets. Zelenskyy expressed that Ukraine was prepared to move forward with proposals for peace in a meeting in Germany. Both Trump and Harris pledged their support for the Ukrainian leader, with Trump emphasizing the need to stop the war in Ukraine and prevent Putin from winning.
The meeting comes amidst rising tensions in the US over support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion and the upcoming US elections. Trump has claimed he would end the conflict but has not provided details, while Harris has rejected his suggestions as “proposals for surrender.” Meanwhile, the European Union has increased financial support for Ukraine, offering a loan of up to 35 billion euros to provide fiscal flexibility for the country.
Despite the support from the EU and US presidential candidates, Russian forces are advancing in eastern Ukraine almost 1,000 days since their invasion. The Ukrainian army has a tenuous hold on part of the Kursk region in Russia, providing a temporary morale boost. Zelenskyy’s “victory plan” aims to bring an end to the conflict and ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty.
