The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), established in 1978, has more than 10,000 peacekeepers from 50 countries patrolling the Blue Line border between Lebanon and Israel. However, tensions have escalated following Israel’s recent attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, resulting in a humanitarian crisis with over 600 deaths and 90,000 new displacements. This is the most challenging period for UNIFIL since 2006, as the intensity of bombardments has increased significantly in the past months.
Despite Israel’s preparations for a ground invasion, UNIFIL remains present to monitor the situation and engage in mediation efforts. The mission calls for the implementation of resolution 1701 to promote peace and establish a weapon-free zone in the region. Other countries, including the US and France, have called for a ceasefire, but Israel has rejected this proposal, vowing to continue fighting against Hezbollah.
UNIFIL is actively facilitating negotiations and providing humanitarian aid to the affected population. The mission maintains dialogue with the Lebanese army, authorities, Hezbollah, and the Israeli army to de-escalate tensions. Displaced people in the South have moved to Beirut or northern areas due to the ongoing conflict.
As Israel’s air assault continues, UNIFIL faces challenges in carrying out its peacekeeping activities amidst the escalating violence. The mission emphasizes the importance of communication and mediation to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict, with support from the international community.
