A manhunt has been launched in South Africa after 17 people, including 15 women, were killed in a mass shooting in a rural town in the southeast of the country. The shootings occurred in two houses in close proximity in the town of Lusikisiki in Eastern Cape province. Despite a search for suspects and deployment of a team of detectives and forensic experts, the motives for the attack remain unknown. Police minister Senzo Mchunu has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to crack the case and find the criminals responsible. South Africa has seen a high number of homicides this year, with firearms being the leading cause of death in these cases. Mass shootings, such as the recent one in Lusikisiki, have become alarmingly common in the country, with a similar incident resulting in the deaths of 10 family members in a neighboring province earlier this year. Authorities attribute the prevalence of these crimes to the large number of illegal guns in circulation despite relatively strict firearm laws. As the investigation into the Lusikisiki shooting continues, authorities are urging the suspects to surrender themselves or face being apprehended by law enforcement.
