In a tragic turn of events, a hospital in northeastern Ukraine was hit by two consecutive Russian drone attacks, resulting in at least eight deaths. The first attack occurred on Saturday morning, claiming the life of one person, and was followed by another attack as patients and staff were evacuating the medical center. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating that Russia had used Shahed drones in the assault, leaving eleven others injured.
The city of Sumy, where the hospital is located, is in close proximity to Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an offensive on August 6. The regional prosecutors reported that the first attack occurred at 7:35 am, targeting the hospital where there were 86 patients and 38 staff. The second attack took place at around 8:25 am, further complicating rescue efforts.
Ukraine’s air force claimed to have shot down a large number of Russian drones, while Russia reported shooting down Ukrainian drones over the bordering Belgorod and Kursk regions. President Zelenskyy recently visited the United States to seek support for Ukraine and discuss his “victory plan” to bring an end to the conflict on Ukraine’s terms. In response, President Biden announced an additional $8 billion in military aid for Ukraine, including the provision of Joint Standoff Weapon munitions to enhance the country’s strike capabilities. The escalating violence has once again underscored the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in the region.
