Herbert Kickl, the leader of the far-right Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ), is facing tough coalition negotiations following the party’s success in last week’s national election. Kickl met with the federal president to discuss forming a new government after the FPÖ won nearly 29% of the votes but fell short of a majority. However, the centre-left SPÖ, Green Party, and liberal NEOS have all rejected joining a coalition with the FPÖ. The former ruling OVP is open to collaboration but only if Kickl is excluded.
Kickl, known for his controversial statements and conspiracy theories, has a history of anti-immigration rhetoric and divisive politics. Even Chancellor Nehammer’s conservative Austrian People’s Party sees Kickl as a “security risk,” citing his radicalization and inability to govern effectively.
The FPÖ, founded in 1956 by former Nazis, has a hard-line stance on immigration and seeks to reclaim powers from the EU for Austria. They are part of a right-wing populist alliance in the European Parliament and have called for lifting sanctions against Russia while criticizing Western military aid to Ukraine.
Despite their success in the election, the FPÖ faces challenges in forming a coalition government due to their polarizing leader and controversial policies. As negotiations continue, Kickl’s future remains uncertain as he navigates the complexities of coalition-building in Austria’s political landscape.
