Palestinian journalist Hassan Hamad was killed in an Israeli air strike on his home in Jabalia camp, bringing the total number of journalists killed in the conflict to 175. The 19-year-old journalist had received threats and warnings from Israeli officers to stop filming in Gaza before his death. Hamad had been documenting the war in Gaza for over a year and his work appeared on Al Jazeera and other networks.
Colleagues and the Government’s Media Office in Gaza confirmed Hamad’s death, stating that his home was deliberately targeted to silence him. A post on Hamad’s social media account by his colleague described how he struggled to continue his work despite the dangers he faced. Days before his death, Hamad had received threatening messages from an Israeli officer warning him to stop his reporting activities in Gaza.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned the killing of journalists in the conflict, with at least 128 journalists and media workers among the casualties since the war began. The Israeli government has not yet commented on Hamad’s death. CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna stated that every time a journalist is killed or harmed, the truth suffers, and those responsible for these casualties will face judgment both under international law and in the judgment of history.
