Despite police crackdown, supporters of jailed ex-PM rally in Pakistan | Protests continue

Supporters of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan rallied in Islamabad demanding his release from jail, despite a ban on protests and a police crackdown. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party claimed that their leader from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Province, Ali Amin Gandapur, was abducted and unlawfully detained. Gandapur was leading protesters camping on the Islamabad-Peshwar highway, where police used tear gas to deter them from entering the city.

This protest is the latest in a series of demonstrations by PTI supporters, who have faced a crackdown from authorities. The PTI also held a gathering in Lahore, where roads were locked down. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accused protesters of clashing with police, resulting in injuries to over 80 officers. The authorities had intelligence that the protesters planned to disrupt diplomatic engagements, including a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting.

Amnesty International expressed concern over restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, labeling it a clampdown on the right to protest in Pakistan. The social media site X has been blocked in the country since the election, which PTI claims was rigged. Imran Khan, who served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, was imprisoned last year on various charges. Although some convictions have been overturned, he remains in jail facing ongoing trials.

Despite the ban on protests and police crackdown, PTI supporters continue to rally for Khan’s release, alleging political motivations behind his imprisonment and exclusion from the recent elections. The situation in Pakistan remains tense as the government and protesters clash over issues of political freedom and human rights.
