In a recent economic address, former President Donald Trump criticized the U.S. for allowing “big companies” to “raid and rape our country” by exporting goods made overseas. He proposed offering incentives for foreign companies to open factories in the U.S. with low taxes, energy costs, and regulatory burdens, but only if they hire American workers and manufacture their products domestically. The Trump campaign spokesperson noted that such deals have been detrimental to the country and promised a 15% corporate tax rate for companies producing goods in America. Trump’s history of making Trump-branded products in countries like China has raised questions about his anti-offshoring rhetoric. This is not the first time Trump has used controversial language in relation to trade with China, having previously accused the country of “raping our country” through currency devaluation. Trump himself has faced allegations of rape, most notably in a civil case filed by writer E. Jean Carroll, which resulted in a jury finding him not liable for rape but liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll. Trump is appealing the verdicts in these cases.
