The Justice Department has sent a letter to tech billionaire Elon Musk’s super PAC, America PAC, warning that its $1 million daily giveaway in battleground states may violate federal law. The letter, sent by the Public Integrity Section, comes amid mounting pressure for an investigation into the lottery as a potential violation of election laws. Musk awarded $1 million to a winner during a town hall in Pittsburgh, and the contest requires participants to be registered voters in swing states and sign a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments. Legal experts believe the contest falls into a legal gray area and could potentially violate election law, although some disagree. Federal law prohibits paying people to register to vote, but Musk’s contest aims to get 1 million registered voters in swing states to support the Constitution. The contest is open to residents of seven swing states, and Musk announced the giveaway at a town hall event in Pennsylvania. So far, four winners have been named, and Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, has a net worth of $240 billion. The DOJ has not commented on the letter, and the super PAC’s treasurer has not responded to requests for comment.
