After serving as the three-term Mayor of Huntington, West Virginia, Steve Williams is now setting his sights on a higher role – Governor of the state. With a long history of public service, Williams believes his experience in tackling issues such as the opioid epidemic and building infrastructure in Huntington can be applied statewide.
His top priority, he says, is the fiscal soundness of West Virginia. Despite reports of an $800 million surplus in tax collections, Williams believes there are pressing issues that need to be addressed using these funds, such as the care for foster children and staffing shortages in the prison system.
Williams points out that West Virginia places four times as many children per capita in the foster care system compared to the rest of the United States and notes that the correctional officer vacancy rate currently stands at 7%. He plans to conduct a thorough audit of the state’s finances on his first day in office to reallocate resources where needed.
Williams emphasizes the need for a community-based approach to solving the challenges facing West Virginia. With a proven track record of making progress in Huntington, he believes that the same principles can be applied statewide to bring about positive change.
As he launches his gubernatorial campaign, Williams will be focusing on addressing these critical issues and working towards a brighter future for the Mountain State.
