West Virginia Supreme Court to Address Class A Volleyball Dispute

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (WVSSAC) is turning to the Supreme Court of Appeals for clarity on a contentious issue surrounding Class A volleyball in the state. This decision follows a recent ruling from the Hardy County Circuit Court, which has created conflicting directives with a previous order from the Tyler County Circuit Court concerning the classification of schools.

In an official statement released on Saturday, the WVSSAC explained, "To address this inconsistency, the WVSSAC will seek clarification and guidance from the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia." This move comes in the wake of a week that saw other volleyball classes compete at the state tournament in Charleston, while teams in Class A were barred from participation due to ongoing legal disputes.

The situation arose following four injunctions issued from diferentes counties that focused on the reclassification of schools. These legal challenges have left the WVSSAC in a complicated position, navigating conflicting court orders and the implications for student-athletes.

Class A teams, traditionally comprised of smaller schools, have found themselves sidelined during a key competitive event, raising concerns over fairness and equity in the tournament structure. As the state awaits a resolution from the Supreme Court, the future of Class A volleyball remains uncertain.

The WVSSAC has emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to compete, and it hopes that a swift resolution will restore the integrity of the tournament process. As this legal matter unfolds, stakeholders in West Virginia’s high school sports community will be watching closely for updates from the state’s highest court.
