Accusations of attempted coup against ex-president Jair Bolsonaro following his defeat in 2022 election

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is one of 37 people recommended for charges by the federal police, including attempted coup d’état, following the 2022 election that he lost. The police accused him and others of violent abolition of the Democratic state of law, coup d’état, and being part of a criminal organization. The investigation stems from the speculation surrounding Bolsonaro’s role in the election-denying movement that led to riots in Brasilia in 2023, soon after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office. Some protesters were aiming to create chaos to justify a military coup, and there were plans to assassinate Lula. After the police present their report to Brazil’s Supreme Court, the prosecutor general’s office will decide whether to press charges against Bolsonaro and any other implicated individuals. Senior members of Bolsonaro’s government, including his running mate and defense minister, were also named in the police report. Bolsonaro never accepted his electoral defeat in 2022 and fled Brazil before Lula’s inauguration. He later returned and surrendered his passport to police investigating his involvement in the capital riots, where his supporters stormed and vandalized key government buildings.
