Australia introduces new bill while the UK considers blocking social media for children under 16, says World News

The UK government is considering a potential ban on social media for children under 16, following in the footsteps of Australia. UK technology secretary Peter Kyle stated that he would “do what it takes” to ensure online safety, especially for children, and hinted at a possible ban similar to Australia. However, Kyle emphasized the need for more evidence before implementing such a ban.

Kyle also announced further research into the effects of smartphones and social media on young people, acknowledging the lack of firm, peer-reviewed evidence currently available. The UK regulator Ofcom will be taking on new powers under the Online Safety Act, with Kyle outlining his priorities in a “letter of strategic intent”.

Meanwhile, Australia has introduced a world-first law to ban children under 16 from using social media, aiming to address online safety concerns. The bill, which has wide political support, also plans to block access to online pornography for users under 18. Social media platforms could face fines of up to USD 33 million for failing to prevent young children from creating accounts.

However, the ban in Australia excludes messaging apps, online games, and platforms focused on health and education. While there are concerns about isolating teenagers from their online social circles, the focus remains on creating a safer and healthier online environment for young users.
