Beko Europe has announced the closure of two sites in Italy, leading to nearly 2,000 job losses. The decision comes as part of the company’s long-term business transformation plan, which aims to address underperforming production bases and challenging market conditions.
The closure of the sites in Siena, Comunanza, and Cassinetta will result in significant redundancies, with the company citing unsustainable capacity utilization rates and financial losses over the past seven years. Despite investments in the affected sites, Beko Europe believes that restructuring is necessary to ensure a sustainable future.
As part of the business transformation plan, Italy will become Beko’s center of excellence for global industrial design and cooking, with a €110 million investment in new products and manufacturing capabilities. The company also plans to streamline operations, boost automation and efficiency, and explore the potential conversion of existing plants.
Furthermore, the company will adjust central functions in Milan and Fabriano, aiming to remove duplicate structures and improve efficiency. While the plan is difficult, Beko Europe believes it is necessary to guarantee a competitive future for its operations in Italy.
The company’s decision has sparked concern among unions and employees, who are facing uncertain job prospects. Beko Europe has pledged to support affected employees through the transition and explore opportunities for reindustrialization in the affected areas.
