After a recent strike on Ukraine using a hypersonic ballistic missile, the Kremlin has stated that the attack was a warning to the west. The strike, using the newly developed Oreshnik missile, was intended to show that Russia will respond to moves by the US and the UK to let Kyiv strike back with their missiles. The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, stated that although Russia was not obligated to warn the US, they informed them 30 minutes before the launch. The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will be attending a G7 meeting in Italy over the weekend to discuss the situation in Ukraine, among other global issues.
Russian forces have also reportedly taken control of a settlement in eastern Ukraine, leading to concerns of an escalation in the conflict. Additionally, the UK has stated that recent developments have changed the nature of the conflict in Ukraine’s favor, with Ukraine deploying drones effectively against Russian military targets.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has hinted at possible strikes on Western countries supplying weapons to Ukraine, leading to heightened tensions. The UK Home Secretary emphasized that aggression from Russia will not be tolerated, while the Polish Prime Minister has warned of the risk of a global conflict breaking out. The situation remains tense, with both Ukraine and Russia positioning themselves for negotiations in the face of uncertain outcomes with the new US administration taking office soon.
