The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over suspected war crimes in Gaza. While Israel does not recognize the authority of the ICC, more than 120 countries that are part of the ICC are legally bound to enforce the arrest warrants. International human rights lawyer Jonathan Kuttab emphasized that countries are expected to respect and enforce the law, with many of Israel’s allies committing to doing so. Netanyahu has denied the charges and called them anti-Semitic.
Following the ICC’s decision, Netanyahu and Gallant could potentially be detained in countries including Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom, among others. The ICC’s actions have shrunk the pair’s world significantly as they are now fugitives from justice. Netanyahu and Gallant have not indicated any intention to turn themselves in. The issuance of arrest warrants against high-ranking Israeli officials marks a significant development in international justice and accountability.
