Laos has been rocked by a tragic incident of alcohol poisoning that has led to the deaths of six foreign tourists. Popular among backpackers, the East Asian nation is also known for its tainted alcohol, which is suspected to be the cause of the recent deaths in Vang Vieng. Among the deceased are two Australian teenagers, a British woman, two Danes, and one American national.
19-year-old Holly Bowles was in critical condition following the poisoning and was on life support before passing away. Her friend, Bianca Jones, also succumbed to the suspected poisoning. The Lao News agency KPL confirmed the deaths of two Danes and one American citizen due to tainted alcohol.
The owner and manager of the hostel where the victims stayed have been detained by authorities, although formal charges have not yet been filed. The victims had consumed complimentary shots at the hostel, in addition to drinking at a bar in Vang Vieng. Methanol, a dangerous substance that can be present in counterfeit or illegal alcohol, is believed to be the cause of the poisoning.
The government of Laos is conducting an investigation and has promised an official statement once all details, evidence, and witness testimonies have been gathered. The deaths of the foreign tourists have sparked concern and outrage, with multiple countries issuing statements about the incident. The tragic deaths serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of tainted alcohol and the importance of caution while traveling in foreign countries.
