Italy’s Foreign Minister has condemned an attack on the UN peacekeeping mission headquarters in Lebanon after rockets, allegedly fired by Hezbollah or its affiliates, hit the base in southern Lebanon. Four Italian soldiers were slightly injured in the attack. The Minister, Antonio Tajani, stated that Hezbollah cannot play with weapons and must ensure the safety of UNIFIL soldiers.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also condemned the attack and called for the parties on the ground to identify those responsible and ensure the safety of peacekeepers. The attack comes amid heavy clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters in south Lebanon.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and a Hamas military leader for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war in Gaza and a 2023 incursion into Israel. The war in Gaza has resulted in more than 44,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Israel has claimed to have killed over 17,000 militants, while Hezbollah has begun firing into Israel in response to the conflict. The situation escalated with Israel launching a ground offensive into Lebanon, displacing tens of thousands on both sides of the border. The UN has called for the safety of peacekeepers and accountability for those responsible for the attacks.
