CNN recently conducted a national exit poll of voters to gauge their thoughts on the top issues, candidates, and the economy. The results showed that more than one-third of voters considered democracy to be their main concern, followed by the economy, abortion, and immigration. The majority of Vice President Kamala Harris supporters prioritized democracy, while former President Donald Trump voters focused on the economy and immigration.
Additionally, most voters, including both Trump and Harris supporters, voted based on their support for their candidate rather than against the opponent. Trump voters valued leadership ability and the capacity for change, while Harris supporters had varying opinions on what qualities were most important in their candidate. Overall, the electorate expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the US economy.
Despite negative views on the economy, voters remained optimistic about the nation’s future. Exit polls, like those conducted by CNN, provide insights into the demographic profile and political views of voters, although they are polls and subject to margins of error. The methodology of the CNN exit polls included in-person interviews with Election Day voters and early and absentee voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points for the full sample of respondents.
The findings from the exit polls will help to understand the political landscape of the 2024 general election and will be compared to the actual election results. The polls indicate a mix of concerns among voters, highlighting democracy and the economy as key issues in the minds of American voters.
