The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recently competed in the WVU Invitational at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown. The men’s team finished in second place, while the women’s team placed fourth. Several standout performances were seen throughout the meet.
In the women’s events, Olivia Busch and Miranda Kirtley placed second and third, respectively, in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Delaney Cox won the 200-yard backstroke, setting a program record. Gabriela Martin placed second in the 100-yard freestyle, while Maddie Smutny won the 200 butterfly with the fifth-fastest time in program history.
On the men’s side, Conner McBeth finished third in the 100-yard freestyle, while Danny Berlitz placed second in the 200 breaststroke. Álvaro Santiago secured third place in the 200 butterfly. The men’s relay team won the 400 freestyle relay event.
In diving, Levi Hellmann, Owen Recker, and Abigail Sullivan posted NCAA Zone qualifying scores on the platform. Recker won the men’s platform event, while Hellmann placed second. Sullivan placed second in the women’s platform event.
Overall, the competition was fierce, with Navy’s men’s team finishing in first place and William and Mary’s women’s team claiming the top spot. The Mountaineers put on a strong showing, with multiple top finishes and impressive performances.
