Legal Aid of West Virginia, the state’s largest nonprofit legal services organization, has received a grant of nearly $433,000 to develop artificial intelligence tools to make legal information more accessible to residents in need. The grant, provided by the national Legal Services Corporation, will help create “A Common Legal Help AI Model” using information from leading law websites to answer commonly asked legal questions. The goal is to improve access to legal assistance and make the information more user-friendly for those seeking help, especially low-income individuals.
Senator Joe Manchin praised Legal Aid of West Virginia for its efforts and the funding support for technology innovation. The Legal Services Corporation, established in 1974, supports legal organizations serving low-income individuals across the country through grants for technology projects. These funds have been successful in enhancing cybersecurity measures, educational programs, and overall program capacity to provide no-cost legal representation to those in need. LSC President Ron Flagg highlighted the importance of technology in addressing access to justice issues and supporting legal aid organizations in their efforts.
