President-elect Donald Trump has announced his nomination of retired Gen. Keith Kellogg to serve as assistant to the president and special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg has a strong military and business background and previously served in sensitive national security roles in Trump’s first administration. In a policy paper co-authored by Kellogg, he outlined a strategy to end the war in Ukraine, which includes conditioning U.S. military aid on Ukraine’s participation in peace talks with Russia. Trump has expressed support for stopping the war in Ukraine and has pledged to work with both parties to help settle the conflict. However, he has criticized the amount of U.S. aid given to Ukraine and has indicated the need for European nations to contribute more. Vice president-elect JD Vance, as well as Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have also spoken out against U.S. aid to Ukraine. Vance has expressed support for engaging in negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and NATO allies to end the war. In light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the issue of U.S. aid to Ukraine and the ongoing conflict remains a topic of debate and discussion within the Trump administration.
