Investigators discovered 11 children working overnight in hazardous conditions at meat processing plant

A cleaning company, Qvest LLC, has been fined $171,000 for employing 11 children to work overnight shifts at a meat processing plant in Iowa. The children were tasked with using hazardous chemicals to clean equipment at the Seaboard Triumph Foods pork factory, which is illegal under U.S. law. This is not the first time underage workers have been found at the facility, as Fayette Janitorial Services LLC was previously fined for employing children.

Seaboard Triumph Foods stated that they were not involved in the illegal employment of minors and had terminated their contract with Qvest. Qvest must pay the fine, ensure they do not engage in child labor, and undergo a review of their employment policies within 90 days. The U.S. Department of Labor has found labor violations involving over 4,000 children in the 2024 financial year, resulting in fines totaling more than $15 million.

Former Department of Labor official Paul DeCamp, who now represents Seaboard Triumph, highlighted the issue of fraudulent workers using fake identification documents to obtain jobs, leading to incidents like underage workers being hired in slaughterhouses. A year-long NBC News investigation uncovered the dangerous working conditions faced by underage workers, including the story of a 16-year-old who died after getting stuck in machinery at a meat processing facility.
