Police in Finland do not believe criminal activity is behind damaged data cables in the southern part of the country.

Finnish police have confirmed that there is no suspicion of criminal activity in the damage to two data cables running across the land border between Sweden and Finland. The incident, which occurred on Monday, affected 6,000 private customers and 100 businesses. Global Connect, the company providing digital infrastructure and data communication in Northern Europe, quickly repaired the cables, restoring internet connectivity to almost all customers by Tuesday afternoon.

According to a spokesman for Global Connect, one incident was related to excavation work while the cause of the second incident is still under investigation. Similar cable damages occur every couple of months, but it was unusual for two cables in the same region to be damaged on the same day. Finnish authorities are working with the company to investigate the matter.

The incident comes after the rupture of two data cables on the Baltic Sea bed last month, which led to investigations by Finnish, Swedish, and German authorities. Germany’s defense minister suggested sabotage, but no proof has been found. Last week, Sweden requested China’s cooperation in explaining the rupture of the Baltic Sea data cables, where a China-flagged vessel had been spotted. Despite the recent incidents, Finnish police have confirmed that there is no criminal suspicion in the damage to the land border data cables.
