Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the need for Syrian President Bashar Assad to reconcile with his people and engage in talks with the opposition amidst the recent rapid advance by opposition fighters in Syria. Turkey and Iran, despite supporting opposing sides in the Syrian civil war, have agreed to collaborate with Russia to restore calm following the insurgents’ offensive in Aleppo.
The push by fighters supported by Turkey has put pressure on Assad, whose allies like Iran and Russia are preoccupied with their own conflicts. The rebel offensive in Aleppo, a key city in Syria, has intensified the 13-year civil war and raised concerns of further violence in the region.
Fidan expressed Turkey’s readiness to contribute to reconciliation efforts and highlighted the importance of engaging in political dialogue with the opposition. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s full support for the Syrian government, aligning with Assad’s stance.
The situation in Syria has prompted neighboring countries like Iraq to increase security measures along the border. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed hope for stability in Syria in line with the legitimate demands of the Syrian people.
Efforts are underway for Turkey, Iran, and Russia to convene a new three-way meeting to address the conflict and work towards peace and stability in the region. Despite ongoing airstrikes and attacks, diplomatic initiatives continue to seek a resolution to the long-standing conflict in Syria.
