Le Pen aims to oust Macron’s PM Barnier in France

France’s government is facing a crisis as President Emmanuel Macron’s center-right prime minister, Michel Barnier, is facing a no-confidence vote from far-right and leftist opposition. The main point of contention is Barnier’s attempts to control France’s soaring budget deficit by cutting spending and raising taxes. With France’s deficit projected to hit 6.1% of GDP, much higher than the EU requirement of 3% or lower, economic and political instability looms.

If the government falls, it would be the shortest-lived in French history, with a divided legislature unable to find common ground. Macron, who called for snap parliamentary elections in June, has been working with a fragile coalition to govern. However, without a majority, Barnier could face ouster using Article 49.3 of the French Constitution, leading to further uncertainty.

The rise of far-right populists, including Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party, signals a growing trend in Europe, with Germany also facing political instability. Far-right movements across the continent are challenging mainstream politics, inspired by the likes of President-elect Donald Trump.

With Macron unable to run for president again in 2027, Le Pen is seen as a frontrunner but faces legal challenges that could bar her from the race. The future of French politics remains uncertain, with the possibility of far-right forces gaining more influence and potentially forming a transatlantic alliance with similar movements in the US.
