Former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney has hit back at Donald Trump after he suggested that members of the bipartisan House committee that investigated the January 6 Capitol attack should be jailed. Trump, in his interview with NBC News, also indicated that he would pardon most of the insurrectionists involved in the attack. Cheney responded by calling out Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election and seize power, urging the justice department special counsel to release evidence of Trump’s actions.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden is set to speak at the Tribal Nations Summit in Washington DC and attend a Holiday Ball with members of Congress. Additionally, Andy Kim and Adam Schiff are expected to be sworn into the Senate today. Congress is also working on a year-end defense spending bill before the new Republican majority takes office next year.
In the interview, Trump also made promises to quickly act on pardons, mass deportations, and tariffs if he returns to the White House, despite facing criminal charges himself. The former president reiterated baseless claims of a corrupt system and suggested that members of the January 6 committee were behind the attack, leading to Schiff’s response defending the committee’s work in upholding democracy.
Overall, the ongoing political tensions highlight the continued division within the US political landscape as key figures from both parties clash over the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
