Russia-Ukraine War: Major Events on Day 1,021 | Updates on Conflict


On Wednesday, December 11, Ukraine experienced a Russian missile attack on a medical clinic in Zaporizhzhia, resulting in four deaths and 19 injuries. Additionally, a kamikaze drone severely damaged a vehicle belonging to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as officials monitored the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. While no staff were injured in the attack, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi condemned the incident as “unacceptable”.

In political and diplomatic news, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, visited Beijing for talks with Chinese leaders. The United States Treasury disbursed a $20bn loan to Ukraine from frozen Russian assets as part of a $50bn G7 support package. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that peace talks to end Russia’s war in Ukraine could begin in winter. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko revealed that Belarus is hosting Russian nuclear weapons and preparing for the deployment of Moscow’s newest hypersonic ballistic missile.

The US State Department approved the potential sale of F-16 sustainment services and related equipment to Ukraine for $266.4m, with contractors including Sabena, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, and Pratt and Whitney. The United Kingdom will provide intelligence to a new unit in Cyprus tasked with preventing Russia from evading international sanctions. Cyprus has already frozen $1.9bn in Russian assets since the invasion of Ukraine.
