Suspect Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Nancy Mace on Capitol Grounds

James McIntyre, 33, of Illinois was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police for assaulting Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C. Mace said she was physically accosted at the Capitol by a person allegedly defending transgender rights. The incident occurred in the Rayburn House Office Building and McIntyre was tracked down by officers after a House member’s office reported the incident. The suspect was screened before entering the building, which was open to the public at the time. Mace had introduced a measure last month to bar lawmakers and House employees from using single-sex facilities based on their biological sex in response to Sarah McBride’s election as the first openly transgender member of Congress. Protests against Mace’s measure had taken place outside a House office building the week before. Mace suffered a wrist injury from the assault but stated that she will not be deterred by violence or threats on her life. Capitol Police did not provide specific details about McIntyre or address questions regarding his connection to advocating for transgender rights.
