Barry Humphries Collection Featuring Dame Edna Memorabilia Set to Be Auctioned, Including Possums!

Renowned entertainer Barry Humphries, known for his satirical characters such as Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, passed away in April 2023 at the age of 89. A collection of about 250 items from his personal collection will be going up for auction at Christie’s in London on 13 February.

One of the highlights of the auction will be a pair of diamante-encrusted spectacles worn by Dame Edna, estimated to sell for up to £1,500. The collection also includes works by artists such as Charles Conder, Jean Delville, and Fernand Khnopff, with top estimates ranging from £100,000 to £300,000.

Benedict Winter, associate director of private and iconic collections at Christie’s London, described Humphries as a “true polymath and connoisseur” with a passion for collecting and deepening his knowledge. The collection provides insight into the private world of the comedic genius.

Humphries, who moved from Australia to London in 1959, became a staple of the British comedy scene and appeared in West End shows like Maggie May and Oliver!. His talents extended beyond performing to scriptwriting and film producing, and he created a range of memorable alter egos such as Sandy Stone, Martin Agrippa, Lance Boyle, and Barry McKenzie.

The full pre-sale exhibition of Barry Humphries: The Personal Collection will be on public view from 7 to 12 February at Christie’s London. The auction promises to be a unique opportunity for fans and collectors to acquire pieces from the personal collection of a legendary entertainer.
