Harrods Implements Cover Charge Ahead of Christmas Strikes in London

Luxury department store Harrods in London has introduced a mandatory £1 fee for diners in all its cafes and restaurants, on top of the existing 12.5% service charge. Harrods stated that the fee was implemented to remain competitive in pricing and uphold a high standard of service. The fee comes amidst strikes planned by over 100 Harrods workers over the Christmas period due to a pay and conditions dispute. The workers are seeking an annual pay increase, a Christmas bonus, and an end to the cover charge, or alternatively have the charge distributed to restaurant and kitchen employees.

Harrods emphasized that the cover charge was introduced to help maintain premium environments during peak business periods and is unrelated to legislation ensuring workers keep all tips given by customers. The store has been paying all service charges to colleagues since January 2022, ahead of the legislation. However, there are concerns that the cover charge might discourage diners from leaving tips. Additionally, the strikes and fee introduction come at a challenging time for Harrods after allegations of sexual misconduct against former owner Mohamed Al Fayed were revealed.

During his lifetime, Fayed faced no criminal charges for the alleged misconduct, and Harrods has condemned his actions, expressing deep concern for the victims. The store acknowledged that the victims were failed at the time but emphasized that the company has moved on since Fayed sold Harrods in 2010.
