Newly elected West Virginia state lawmaker Joseph de Soto, a Republican representing part of Berkeley County, was arrested for making terroristic threats against government officials, including Speaker of the House Roger Hanshaw. De Soto, 61, won his first term in the House in November, but changed his party affiliation to Democrat just a day before his arrest. State police are still investigating the case, with de Soto potentially facing a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years in prison if convicted. West Virginia GOP Party Chair Matt Herridge condemned de Soto’s actions, saying it is a burden for elected officials to face threats against themselves and their families. The lieutenant of the West Virginia State Police emphasized that threats against government officials will not be tolerated. De Soto did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and the case remains under investigation.
