Rich Rodriguez expected to return to West Virginia as head football coach, leaving Jacksonville State

West Virginia is bringing back Rich Rodriguez as head coach, 17 years after a messy breakup at the end of a successful seven-season run. The 61-year-old native of Grant Town, W.Va., led Jacksonville State to their first Conference USA title on Friday.

Rodriguez was known for his up-tempo, spread-option offense during his time at West Virginia, turning the team into a national contender with three double-digit victory seasons. After Neal Brown was fired, West Virginia sought a replacement and Rodriguez seemed like an improbable choice.

Rodriguez’s departure from West Virginia in 2007 led to a legal battle over a $4 million buyout, settled with Michigan paying $2.5 million and Rodriguez paying $1.5 million. His time at Michigan was less successful, getting fired after a 3-9 season and disagreements with the administration.

After working in TV, Rodriguez had a successful stint at Arizona before being fired over sexual harassment allegations. He spent time as offensive coordinator at Ole Miss and an assistant at Louisiana-Monroe before coaching at Jacksonville State.

Now returning to West Virginia, Rodriguez will look to bring sustained success to the Mountaineers in the Big 12. The hard feelings from his previous departure seem to have been put behind as he seeks to recapture the success he had during his first stint at the school.
